What's Your Durango?
"So far, my seventeen-year-old son and I have completed 411 miles of the 485-mile Colorado Trail that stretches from Denver to Durango, Colorado. We’ve done it in sections one week each year over the past several years. This year we completed a 54-mile section from Spring Creek Pass outside of Lake City to Molas Pass outside of Silverton.
This backpacking trip is the highlight of our year and we look forward to it all year long. The friends we’ve made along the way, the amazing mountain vistas and the sense of accomplishment have all been amazing and transformational! It’s been an incredible experience setting such a large, long-term goal and working towards it diligently. And the experience has been made so much richer by sharing it with my son.
I don’t know about you, but for me sometimes when I’m on a long hike like this it’s easy just to focus on putting one foot in front of the other. At times like this excuses for giving up start to creep into my mind. Last year I had knee surgery and I began to wonder if I should abandon the dream of finishing our CT journey. But with the help of Physical Therapy and the encouragement of friends and family I was able to rehabilitate my knee and now before we know it, our final destination, Durango will be in sight!
My challenge to you today is to ask yourself, “What’s my Durango? What’s my Katahdin? What’s the last 14er on my list?!” It’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day challenges of work and life. But if you don’t have an idea of what you are working towards, it’s even easier to get distracted.
Maybe your Durango doesn’t have anything to do with human-powered outdoor adventure sports at all. Maybe it’s a big promotion at work, saving up to purchase your first home, finishing your degree, being the next superstar or equipping your teenage son with the tools he needs to graduate high school and be happy and successful afterward. Whatever your goal is, don’t lose sight of it and don’t let yourself get distracted from accomplishing it."
